She's for the Streets: El cinco dia en el barrio!

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

Who told me that it was okay to walk 17 minutes (1.3 km) to the Carulla Santa Lucia supermarket? Oh, and at 12:45 in the afternoon when it’s 93 degrees F, and 78% humidity. I also opted not to wear a hat because I had the cutest green headband.

Since my excursion in the #CartagemaWalledCity was cancelled this morning (I was supposed to have a private brunch with a well-known #Colombian chef), I decided to sleep in, make a veggie omelet and watch something on Netflix. Of course, I didn’t want to waste the entire day watching TV, so I decided to get a head start on preparing for next week.

I scheduled a few social media posts, checked my work email, and realized that I still needed a few more items to hold me over for the next two weeks. I made a good ol’ grocery list so that I wouldn’t anything. I needed to get:

  • Toilet paper

  • Mouthwash

  • Drinking water

  • Soap to mop the floors (it rained and there’s mud everywhere)

  • More veggies/fruit

  • …and a few other things needed to make authentic Colombian dishes.

Now listen! There are small neighborhood bodegas on just about every corner, however, since I didn’t have any more Colombian pesos on me, I thought why not make the walk to the local supermarket and use the ATM there. I even told myself that if the items got too heavy, I could call a taxi.

There goes that friendly game of Frogger again!

HOOOONEY…Let me tell you. By the time I played the game of #Frogger and got to the store, I was so hot, dehydrated and near faint. I completely forgot what I needed to get. I must’ve walked up and down the isles about 3-4 times. For some reason, the only thing I can think of was black pepper. WTH is up with me and black pepper? It wasn’t even on the list, now was it a necessity. Luckily, I managed to grab the 6L bottle of water that I so desperately needed, some lettuce for a salad and a rotisserie chicken (I didn’t have any meat in the fridge). After paying for my things, hitting up the ATM, I thought, I can make it back on my own!

DUMB CHOICE!

I underestimated the weight of the water I was carrying, plus I was also trying to hold my bag of groceries and my umbrella all in the opposite hand. By the time my sweat drops started to burn my eyes, my Google Maps App told me that I was just 5 minutes away. Let me tell you, that was the longest 5 minutes of my life! I kept thinking to myself, if I faint, will someone call me an ambulance? Is 911 a universal number? Will my Airbnb hosts wonder where I am? HAHAHA! The mind is a dangerous thing. Some random creep asked If I wanted to take a ride on the back of his motorcycle. I almost took him

up on that offer, but then I remembered that I wasn’t in my 20s anymore and that all my Safety Tips fans would be so disappointed in me (I was known for hopping on the back of a motorcycle in my 20s. Bad idea).

When I finally made it up my spiral staircase and into my apartment, I ripped my T-shirt off and threw my jean short across the floor. I was standing half naked, in the middle of the doorway with my face in the fan. The neighborhood Abuelas definitely got a show! Thankfully before I left, I took my frozen water bottle out the fridge. I grabbed a Liquid IV packet that I brought along with my and swallowed the mixture aggressively lol!

This is all I have to show for... My 6 liters of water, a rotisserie chicken, lettuce gems, a stick of butter, black pepper and a pack of Panela.

Something's Coming!

As I type this out, the light in my apartment quickly fades from bright to near darkness. It’s almost as if an eclipse is happening. Well, there goes my hopes of going out for my very first Food Find Fridays. Since my neighborhood morphs into a block party at night, I was planning on checking out the restaurant on my corner. The food there always smells incredible, and I am drooling for a taste. For now, I hear cars honking, motorcycles zoom by and people yelling.

Oh! There it goes. I see a quick flash of light. Let me snap a quick pic of the sky before it begins to rain.

The night is very young, and I am hoping to have some fun tonight since it’s my last official day of my vacation. I have a long day at the lake planned for tomorrow morning, then a bar crawl tomorrow night, and a photoshoot on Sunday. If you don’t catch my Food Find Friday post on Instagram/Facebook tonight, then it’s because I got rained out. Did I tell y’all the I was afraid of thunder and lightning? Well, I am! You won’t catch me outside in the rain on purpose…I am NOT about that life. Until then…

Your friend,

BrookeLynn the Friendly Blogger
