DOs and DONTs of Solo Travel

(Season 1)

Travel Saftey Tips

Those that know me, know that I am pretty ballsy when it comes to adventure. However, growing up in a military household, I was taught to keep my head on a swivel. As Poppa E (my father) would say each time I left the house, "stay alert and be vigilant." I know he's pretty intense, but the old man has a point. As travelers, it would be naive of us to think that those horrible things we hear on true crime podcasts, or see on the TV can't happen to us. With that, these tips are my gift from me to you!

Tip #1

Planning and Strategy

Planning a solo trip is a great way to explore the world on your own terms. Before you embark on your journey, make sure you plan out your itinerary and research the places you plan to visit. Make sure you know your destinations, lodging, transportation, and any other important details. It's also important to have a good understanding of local customs and laws. Finally, make sure to have a plan in place in case of an emergency...and share that plan with family and friends. Don't be afraid to also share your location at all times.

Tip #2

Social Media Safety

Social media can be a great way to share travel experiences and connect with people around the world. However, it’s important to be mindful of safety when using it. Always double check the privacy settings on your accounts, and be careful not to share too much personal information. Additionally, be aware of what you post when travelling, as you don't want to draw attention to your absence from home. Finally, don't forget to have fun while using social media - it's a great way to stay connected with friends and family while travelling!

Tip #3

Travel Safety Gadgets

When traveling, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. Investing in a few safety gadgets can be a great way to ensure your safety while on the road. Consider purchasing a portable alarm, hidden wallet, pepper spray, or a GPS tracking device to keep an eye on your location. These gadgets can give you peace of mind while traveling and can help to keep you safe in uncertain situations.

Tip #4

Health Concerns & Food Safety

When planning a trip, it is important to be aware of the potential health risks associated with travel. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), travelers should be aware of potential health risks, such as mosquito-borne illnesses, waterborne diseases, and food- and waterborne illnesses. It is also important to stay informed of any current health advisories or warnings from the CDC and other government health organizations. Be sure to take the necessary precautions to prevent illness and injury while traveling. Be sure to get the recommended vaccinations for the destination, bring any necessary medications, and pack a first aid kit. Additionally, always remember to wear a face covering, practice good hand hygiene, and maintain physical distancing when possible.

Tip #5

Mental & Emotional Health

Traveling can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, such as culture shock and loneliness. Culture shock can be defined as the feeling of disorientation and confusion many travelers experience when they are exposed to a new culture. This feeling of being out of one's depth can have a significant effect on a person's emotional and mental health when they are alone in a foreign environment. It is important to be aware of these feelings and to take time for yourself to adjust to the new culture. Acknowledging your feelings and being open to learning and experiencing new things can help make the transition smoother.

Tip #6

Making Friends...and Loves Abroad

Meeting new people abroad can be an exciting and rewarding experience. However, it's important to stay safe and use common sense when interacting with strangers. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when meeting friends and lovers abroad:

1. Research the local culture and customs - Knowing the local customs and culture can help you avoid any potential misunderstandings or awkward situations.

2. Exercise caution when sharing personal information - It's important to protect your identity when meeting new people.

3. Don't engage in activities that could put you in danger - This includes drinking excessively or engaging in risky behavior.

4. Meet in public places - Meeting in public places can help ensure that you're in a safe and secure environment.

5. Stay alert and trust your instincts - If something feels off, don't hesitate to trust your intuition and walk away.

6. Have a reliable support system - Letting a friend or family member know where you are and who you're with can help ensure your safety.
